Good afternoon, Sports Fans!

I’m back, just as I threatened, with news of our forthcoming punters competitions which act as a garnish to Simon’s Fantasy Football League extravaganza. I have plagiarised two easy-to-enter competitions to kick-start the new domestic season, which hopefully will tempt you from your post-World Cup slumber:

1. Classic ante-post predictions

Easy. Simply tell me who you think will win each senior league in Scotland and England. I’ll then award points based on your teams’ league positions; so the team leading the SPL (containing 12 teams) will be awarded 12 points, the team in second gets 11 points, and so on. The winner (as is the custom) will have accumulated most points based on the final league positions. To assist you I’ve listed every team in all eight leagues, together with the Bookies starting odds on who would win each league.

2. Premiership prediction competition

Based on a similar principal. Predict the finishing order of all Premiership teams this season. The team you think will win the title will then receive 20 points for each win they record during the campaign and 10 points for each draw. The team you think will finish bottom will receive 1 point for each win and 0.5 points for each draw. For example, if you take Chelsea to win the league and Watford to come last, when Chelsea play Watford if Chelsea win you’d score 20 points; if Watford win you’d score 1 point and if it’s a draw you’d score 10.5 points. The winner will be the entrant who scores most points, based on actual Premiership results, over the course of the campaign.

I’ve attached a spreadsheet below which will make it easier for you to enter either or both competitions. Prizes will be awarded and a nominal fee may be charged, but it will only be nominal. Simply complete and return it to me by Friday 18th August.

Punters stalwarts among you may be wondering where the weekly punters competition is. Fret not - it will return after Christmas.

Stay classy,

Tom

World cup predictor comp

Think you know whats going to happen in the World Cup? Have a go at the predictor spreadsheet and see if you can win the Β£20 cash prize.

What’s more is that this competition is free and if you win you will not only have a score in your back pocket and massive amounts of kudos but also free entry to next years FFL competition - what more could you ask for?!

How to do it

For each group match predict the scoreline. There’s 3 points for predicting the correct score and 1 point for guessing the correct results. On top of that there are extra points for getting the resultant group placings correct. Finally guess the eventual winner of the competition.

Download the spreadsheet below and email it to Tom at the usual address and Tom, as ever, will do the rest.

Best of luck!

World Cup Predictor Spreadsheet

Good afternoon, Sports Fans!

I’m beginning to remember why I stopped doing this last season. Until I started putting my tips online, I’d had (believe it or believe it not) only one line down all season. Three weeks later I can’t buy a winner.

Last Week’s Tips

Livingston 0 Celtic 5

Rangers 5 Dunfermline 1

Gretna 1 Dumbarton 0

Morton 2 Peterhead 1

Berwick 1 Montrose 1

Returns: £0

Accumulated losses £30

The only consolation I can draw is that of the five teams I suggested you avoid, only Dundee won. So at least I’m still doing something right…

Punters Pal

No takers this week, so no change to the league table. I understand that the league table isn’t up and running yet, so all you need to know is that Graeme Porter is fighting the good fight for all of us, sitting pretty at the top and forcing the Bookie into second place. No-one else had recorded a winner yet so you can work it out from there, I’m sure.

Nae Luck!

It cannae be me every week. This week’s unlucky loser goes to recently wedded Mark Donohoe, back from honeymoon and now being tailed by his lovely wife Shirley, sorry – Gill to the bookies. Mark was headed for a nice £50 return until Berwick forgot how to beat mince teams at home. Nae Luck!

Bookie’s Friend

Stephen Booth yet again. Stephen showed considerable restraint by restricting himself to thirteen teams this week and even managed to get his success rate up to eight correct. However, the Bookie doesn’t pay out until you reach 100% - how’s the portrait coming on?

The Bookie

A better week for our nemesis, although he still can’t dislodge Graeme from top spot. It’s starting to look ominous, though.

This Week’s Tips

International weekend and the dilemma returns – play safe among the shoo-ins where about 1/50 is the best price on offer (no salivating, Simon), or look for better value but increased risk? Don’t ask me…

Berwick (1/3) v Elgin – I’ll overlook last week’s blip and give Berwick the benefit of the doubt. Most teams beat Elgin , so no reason to suppose that Berwick won’t.

Leyton Orient (6/4) at Stockport – Orient are going well at the top of League 2 while County are second bottom. The visitors are unbeaten away while Stockport have drawn all five home games. I reckon the compilers have priced Orient very generously, but what do I know?

Brazil (8/11) at Bolivia – Brazil have already qualified but should still have too much for the Bolivians, second bottom of the group. Again, a very generous price – note this is a Sunday fixture, live on Bravo.

A tenner on those three will return over £55, hopefully. I was tempted by Serbia (1/2) and France (4/5), but not tempted enough – be wary of these ones. I also strongly fancy Scotland to win but will most probably go for Miller 2-0 for some value (18/1). Let me know where your cash is going at:

I’m off on holiday next week so there’ll be no chat from me. However I hope you’ll still send me your tips for next week and keep the competition ticking over. All the best,

Tom
